India needs to bring down the level of toxic sulphur dioxide released from its over 600 coal-fired power plants in environment and there is a strong demand for technology-driven solutions, a leading global engineering company has said.
“We have been talking to some of our clients in the power generating industry in the country (India). Right now there are over 600 coal-fired power plants in India which needs to reduce SO2 (sulphur dioxide) into the environment,” said Ian F Prescott, senior vice president for Asia Pacific at SNC Lavalin in Singapore.
“We have been also talking to some of the technologies providers. We can help the power market in India improve environmentally,” he said at the Singapore International Energy Week over the weekend.
Prescott said coal will remain a significant fuel for power generating sector as there are abundant reserves of it in India, China and Indonesia.
He, however, added that coal should be made a cleaner fuel for the power sector.
“We are seeing some good level of activities through the Oil & Gas players, including Oil and Natural Gas Corp,” he said about Indian oil and gas sector.
