India’s proposed 540-MW Kwar hydropower project receives environmental clearance

India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has awarded an environmental clearance for the 540-MW Kwar hydropower plant.

The project is located in Jammu & Kashmir’s Chenab River Basin and is being developed by a joint venture led by Chenab Valley Power Projects Ltd., which also includes government-owned NHPC Ltd., the Jammu & Kashmir State Power Development Corp., and PTC India Ltd.

Kwar received the clearance on the recommendation of the environmental ministry’s expert appraisal committee earlier this month.

HydroWorld.com reported India’s Union Cabinet had approved an initial investment worth US$263 million for Kwar and the 600-MW Kiru project in September 2014.
