In December 2016, India’s first transgender college principal Manabi Bandopadhyay resigned after about one-and-a-half years in office. When asked about the sudden resignation, she expressed frustration at “non-cooperation” of a section of teachers and students of her institution. In 2003, Bandopadhyay underwent a gender reassignment surgery and became a woman. After being taunted for being feminine all her life, she was asked to register as a male lecturer when she landed a job at the Vivekananda Centenary College in Jhargram.
